Punctuation Contest!

I have an idea.  I’ve had Big Gay Al’s “I’m Super” (from South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut) stuck in my head all day, so I’d like to do something with it on the blog.

I’d like to see if you can do the impossible — perfectly punctuate an insanely written sentence, while keeping it one sentence.  No cheating!

Here it is:

“Everything is super when you don’t you think I look cute in this hat”

How would YOU do it?

I’m trying to think of a prize I can offer…the only thing I can think of is plugging your blog and getting you into any club in Las Vegas.

Furthermore, where did B.G.A. get his matching tie?  I always thought it was Bob’s, though some of the lyrics online say Vogue and some say Merv’s.

Happy punctuating — and to my fellow Yanks, have a great Memorial Day weekend!

  1. “Everything is super when you don’t; you think I look cute in this hat?”

There’s my guess. Is my second clause valid though? By dropping the question mark in favour of a period it would be, but then the sentence as a whole wouldn’t make any sense. I still worry a little about not having a “do” before the second “you”. Ah well… time will tell, eh?

I have no idea where Al got his tie.

  2. Everything is super; when you don’t, you think I look cute in this hat.

  3. Here’s my submission:

Everything is super—when you don’t, you think, “I look cute in this hat!”

  4. Hrmm. Dash, comma, or semi-colon?

Everything is super when you’re — don’t you think I look cute in this hat?

  5. I have the song stuck in my head, too, now. I agree with Rhine; B. G. A. interrupts himself, so the dash is the most appropriate choice.

“Everything is super when you’re – don’t you think I look cute in this hat?”

  6. I love that song!!

As far as punctuation, I agree with the previous poster, but I think I’m going to go with ellipses since he sort of trails off and then switches subjects.

“Everything is super when you’re…don’t you think I look good in this hat?”

  7. I’m not familiar with the song, so here’s my attempt using just the words as they struck me:

“Everything is super when you (don’t you?) think I look cute in this hat.”

Ahahaha, I’m finding the people who clearly aren’t familiar with the song – but are attempting to punctuate anyway – hilarious! i.e. the first three people and the person before me.

I def. think it’s “Everything is super when you — don’t you think I look cute in this hat?” … these little pants, this matching tie that I got at BOB’S! I definitely hear Bob’s when I listen to the song.

I’m so sorry, Mr. Cripple …

  9. Alexa Moustevelis, if that is your real name, Big Gay Al didn’t get that matching tie at Bob’s. He got it at Merv’s!

  10. ” I appreciate you find my hat distasteful but it’s a perfect day because you noticed me.”

  11. It isn’t one sentence.

It is one sentence interrupted by another. If it were a play and more than one person were involved it would look like this:

BGA: “Everything is super when you’re–”

Grammar Vandal: “Don’t you think I look cute in this hat?”

Since it is only one person, my first instinct would be for it to look like this:

“Everything is super when you’re… Don’t you think I look cute in this hat?”

But that implies that he trails off rather than interrupts his own train of thought.

I think that Rhine’s submission best gets across the speed of speech within the song.
