Unintentionally Hilarious Headline of the Day
August 23, 2008 · 7 Comments
I just pried myself away from CNN, CNN.com, Huffington Post, Politico, MSNBC, Newsweek, Stumper, Boston.com, NYTimes.com, WSJ.com, LATimes.com and the Ticker (with Barack Obama selecting Joe Biden as his running mate, it’s been one of those days) long enough to actually blog something.
What a great day!
Reader Ian just sent me the most amazing picture documenting this event:

Obama Taps Biden.
Oh, yeah.
I bet he tapped that.
The complete Olympics post will be posted tomorrow — strangely, pictures are showing up on my home and work computers, but apparently nowhere else.

Here are the latest hilarious images from the Beijing Olympics:
Thanks for clearing that up.
Just make sure you die in this area — okay? Please?
God, I have to stop updating this after a LONG night out in Back Bay and Beacon Hill…

Olympics Hilarity: Vol. II
August 17, 2008 · 2 Comments
I set up WordPress to post yesterday, but it didn’t work! Weird.
Anyway, here’s round two of hilarious English blunders in Beijing:
Hey! Crippie! Over here!
But it wasn’t a lock. It was a lock robster.
Would you drink your water out of this?
I wonder if they’re in the pie-making business…

Olympics Hilarity: Vol. I
August 15, 2008 · 1 Comment
My mom sent me a great email forward the other day. Titled “Is China ready for the Olympics?” and filled with hilarious pictures, these are must-see examples of language and cultural mishaps.
There are 22 pictures in total, so I’m going to post two a day until the Olympics are over, with a few extras on the final day.
Any of my friends can tell you that I’ve been worshiping Michael Phelps for the last week, so I’m thrilled to do something Olympics-oriented on the blog!
Here we go:
For when being just lovely isn’t good enough.
I kissed a squirrel; I liked it….the taste of his nutty Chapstick….
Stay tuned for more.

What do they teach at ChaCha?
August 12, 2008 · 14 Comments
I heard about ChaCha a few years ago, but I was recently reminded of them when my sister gushed about their services.
Basically, in a nutshell, ChaCha is a professional Googling service. You can email or text them a question (I personally prefer to text), and they’ll answer it, usually within an hour.
Now, why would you need this, especially if you have an iPhone or another phone with a browser? Well, you can ask them qualititative questions as well.
For example, I asked ChaCha what the best club in Boston is. (They told me Felt, and I strongly disagreed — I go to clubs a few times a week, and I think that Mantra, Saint, the Estate and Rumor are MUCH better than Felt.) I asked when Michael Phelps’s next races were being broadcast on the East Coast.
Then I asked, “Who is the grammar vandal?”
The answer? “A female superhero living in Boston that has is [sic] driven to eradicate grammar errors in public in Boston and elsewhere.” A superhero! Yay!
Then, “Who is Kate McCulley?”
The answer: “Kate McCulley is the grammar vandal!” Awesome.
Then it turned sour.
Because I couldn’t resist, I asked the following question: “How do you get a guy to notice you?”
The answer: “Well you could get done up very nice and make sure your near him a lot. Just go up to him and talk with him
“
Make sure YOUR near him a lot?! No! NO!!!
It got worse.
I asked: “Do [certain] guys ever date girls [like me]?”
The answer: “Sure why not? There rather sexy don’t you think? I would encourage trying new things!“
Oh, my God.
Well, I enjoy their answers, so I’m going to keep using it.
But come on — is it REALLY that hard to hire people who know the proper forms of your and you’re and there and their and they’re?

Ghoti — Prounounced “Fish”
August 8, 2008 · 6 Comments
George Bernard Shaw once said that the word ghoti could be pronounced “fish.”
His reasoning?
Well, how to you pronounce tough? Or women? Or nation?
Technically, if you follow those rules, ghoti is pronounced like something else entirely.
Thanks to Alexa for this gem.

Brilliante Weblog Winners
August 6, 2008 · 7 Comments
I am lucky enough to have been awarded the Brilliante Weblog Premio 2008 by two blogs so far: first Readerville, a great blog about books and literature, and The Modern Gal, one of my favorite blogs, about life, love and all things girly. Thanks so much, ladies!

Tradition dictates that you pass this award on to seven favorite bloggers of yours. Here are my favorites:
- Crazy Days and Nights — This celebrity blog is written by an anonymous entertainment lawyer who has connections to the stars and therefore has TONS of information nobody else has. He also releases eight blind items each week and does mass blind item reveals twice a year — if you’re even only mildly into celebrities, you MUST check the blind item reveals out!! They are incredible!
- On Common Ground — I got my current job because of this blog!! The writer, The Missus, and I became blog friends last fall. I told my friends that this blogger had the life I wanted to have ten years from now (great job, married, living in the South End), and boom — now I work for her! She blogs a few times a day about life, funny incidents, fashion and bikram yoga.
- Megorious — In this case, I knew the writer before I knew the blog, but this guy is so hilarious. I love his writing. He combines original writings and videos with links to politics, news and strange things. And nothing can top his Republican Chat Room Debate. It’s one of the most creative and funny things I’ve read in a long time.
- Hot Chicks With Douchebags — because there are few greater pleasures in life than laughing at Jersey guidos and the girls who love them. I went to college in Connecticut with a LOT of guys like this. The spiky hair, the bling, the muscle tees, the faux gang hand gestures…
- Serving Up Life…One Latte at a Time — I love personal blogs, especially those that chronicle people’s lives, and CelticBuffy has one of the best ones out there. She’s a single mom and she’s incredibly honest about her feelings, which is a rarity these days. At the same time, she keeps it totally anonymous, unlike me.
- Kate’s Wedding Blog — If/when I get married, it’s going to be quick, private and simple — think Vegas, courthouse or maybe a deserted beach. That being said, I LOVE the concept of wedding planning, especially fashion and decor, and Kate has amazing style. Sometimes I’ll see something in a store and think of her!
- Random Ramblings About My Crazy Life — Vanessa’s blog, to me, is the perfect representation of what the modern American woman’s blog is today. From contests to BlogHer to recipes to wonderings, her audience always comes first. Her entries are always written with her readers in mind.
If you’re looking for more blogs to add to your Google Reader, any of these would make a worthy addition.

Forgive me….a subject about which I am passionate
August 4, 2008 · 4 Comments
I try to keep the political blogging restricted to Kate’s Adventures, but this made me so excited, I just had to share it.
First I came across this piece written by Bil Browning on the Bilerico Project, which says that Barack Obama will be announcing Indiana Senator (and former governor) Evan Bayh as his running mate on Wednesday. That, by itself alone, made me squeal with excitement. I am crazy about this election! (And I LOVE that Barack is celebrating his birthday in my beloved Boston tonight!)
And then it got even better. Watch the last sentence in this speech by Evan Bayh:
Together, we can build an America of which we can be proud.
Not an America we can be proud of.
I knew that Bayh was one of the top contenders, but he wasn’t my first choice of a running mate. Watching him say that beautiful sentence made me grin. It’s going to be good.

Hapee Bday Gramer Vandal

How awesome is this?
The Missus of On Common Ground (great blog — check it out!) and the rest of my co-workers surprised me with this cake today. I was SO not expecting this! (They also attempted to find a birthday card with a spelling or grammar error on it, and settled for one that read “There’s no place like Paris There’s no place like Paris”.)
It is PERFECT! Thanks, everyone!
