Can you spot the error?

I spotted this game on my friend’s Facebook profile. I’m sure that the eagle-eyed readers of my blog will have an easier time with this than most people!

Did you know that 80% of UCSD students could not find the error above?

EDIT: Holy crap! You guys are fast! I blogged this, went to the movies (saw Atonement — quite good), came back, and there were suddenly nine comments awaiting publication.

Nice job.

Don’t look at the comments if you don’t want to know the answer. 🙂

  1. Missing apostrophe in “whats.”

  2. I got really worried that I wouldn’t see it, until I spotted it. Boy, would I hate to be compared with UCSD students.

    UCLA for life. 🙂

  3. The first word should be “what’s” 🙂

  4. Very easy mistake to spot; “whats” is not even a word.

Who did the study of UCSD students? That statistic sounds made up.

  5. Yeah, but “here” followed by a colon points to the following part, not the preceding one. Unless the instructions read something like “on this page,” that’s not playing fair at all.

  6. The first word should be “What’s”, not “whats” 😉

  7. Besides the missing apostrophe in “What’s”, I can’t find anything wrong with the letters.

  8. Michael Grant Smith

Whats wrong here should have been What’s wrong here.

    Did I win valuable prize’s?

  9. No apostrophe in what’s?

  10. I don’t think the “Whats” is where we’re supposed to be looking. What is wrong here is that after HHH should be III. Instead there is lll-even though this font shows it differently. At least that’s what I think.

  11. I agree with toonhead. It is a nice attempt at being clever, but I think really is not fair, when you consider how it is phrased. So UCSD students shouldn’t get too much flak.

  12. The UCSD thing is possibly urban legend. I’ve also seen this refer to Stanford students.

  13. The Green Miles

Anytime anything says, “75% of Harvard business students got this wrong but 90% of preschoolers got it right!!!!1” you know it’s made up.

  14. I just want to mention that I re-posted this in a grammar nazi forum, and everyone yelled at me.

    Wahhh.

  15. You know, strangely, I came across it on Facebook again — only the apostrophe was intact!

  16. It’s easy to spot the mistake, IF you know the “whats” is part of the game.

From the way it was posted and appeared grapically, I did not think the “whats” was part of the game.

  17. I don’t think “whats” is part of the game, especially if it was seen somewhere else with the apostrophe. I still say those are lowercase L’s after the H’s.

  18. I guess I was wrong, those come up as I’s if you copy and paste them.

  19. Let’s not forget the phrase “What’s wrong here?” is a question and needs a question mark.

  20. well, hi admin adn people nice forum indeed. how’s life? hope it’s introduce branch 😉
